‘Bo’ Knows Nose

Rhinoplasty in Plano near Mckinney and Frisco

Much of what creates a beautiful face is harmony. As the central facial feature, it is critical that the nose does not detract from the most engaging portions of our face…the eyes and lips. Cosmetic adjustments performed during nasal surgery, like Rhinoplasty, can make a profound difference in the facial aesthetic. The intent, however, is to improve the appearance of the nose while optimizing its function.

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?

The nose is not only one of the most prominent features on the face, but it also plays a crucial role in controlling airflow while we breathe. In many cases, visible nasal deformities can be linked to underlying internal issues. Rhinoplasty focuses on improving the appearance of the nose. This surgical procedure can help enhance the appearance of the nose and improve breathing function. Engaging a specialist, like Dr. Brobst, with experience in primary and revision rhinoplasty, affords the best opportunity to achieve both cosmetic and functional improvement.

Open up the possibilities

What can Rhinoplasty do?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, can improve the appearance of the nose. It can make the nose larger or smaller, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. That can help increase your confidence and boost your self-esteem if your nose is a source of insecurity. Rhinoplasty can also improve breathing problems by correcting structural abnormalities in the nose. Good candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose or who have difficulty breathing through their nose due to structural abnormalities in the nasal passages. It's important for candidates to have realistic expectations and be in good physical and mental health. A consultation with a facial plastic surgeon can help determine if a person is a good candidate for this procedure.

Form and function

Rhinoplasty Consultation

During your consultation for Rhinoplasty, Dr. Brobst will review your medical history, listen to your concerns about how your nose looks and functions, and give a thorough examination. Then Dr. Brobst will explain in detail what your specific procedure will look like and answer any questions you might have. From there, your surgery will be scheduled.

RHINOPLASTY PREPARATION AND PROCEDURE

Rhinoplasty is routinely performed as an outpatient procedure under a general anesthetic. Closed rhinoplasty and most functional nasal procedures are accomplished through incisions made inside the nose. Alternatively, an open rhinoplasty requires a small incision between the nostrils that is difficult to see, even on close inspection. Nasal improvements are performed using a structural approach with cartilage grafts from the septum, ear, or rib as needed. The operation takes as long as necessary to accomplish our goals but usually takes several hours for an open rhinoplasty. After awakening from anesthesia and confirming your comfort, you will leave in the care of a responsible adult.

Rhinoplasty Recovery, Results, and Aftercare

Some swelling and discomfort are expected following Rhinoplasty surgery. This is variable between patients and depends on the extent of the required interventions. Elevating the head, avoiding trauma, and using a cool compress all help with swelling. Pain is well controlled and usually has resolved after a couple of days. After one week, all sutures have been removed, the nasal cast is off, and most bruising is gone. Although direct trauma and nosebleeds are a concern, normal activities can be restarted after about 10-14 days. Excessive sun exposure and extremes of temperature should also be avoided during the early healing period. Patients flying in for their operation should make arrangements to stay in town for approximately two weeks. The final contours will steadily improve for the next 9-12 months as the swelling resolves.

Maintaining your rhinoplasty results

To maintain the results of your Rhinoplasty surgery, it's also important to avoid activities that are likely to result in trauma directly to the nose. Some sports are more problematic than others, but fighting/MMA sports are the highest risk. Also, behavioral habits can be problematic. Recurrent sniffing and picking/manipulation can put unnecessary strain and cause internal skin breakdown on your nose. Following medical management recommendations can help keep you breathing-free and clear for a lifetime to follow.

It's also important to practice good skin care to maintain the results of your surgery. This may include using gentle cleansers, avoiding harsh products, using sunblock to protect your skin from sun damage, and monitoring for any new benign or suspicious lesions. In general, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding activities that can put unnecessary strain on your nose can help you maintain the results of your rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

With a skilled and experienced facial plastic surgeon, patients can be confident that there will be no long-term effects from rhinoplasty on their smile. Temporarily, we encourage you not to exercise your full smile or attempt to stretch/strain your upper lip. It often will feel tight or flat, but after two weeks, the smile returns to normal with regular use. Most patients feel their smile may even appear more prominent and beautiful after the procedure due to decreased plunging of the nasal tip and improvement in the proportions of the face.

In general, the desire to change the shape of your nose is a cosmetic rhinoplasty and is considered elective surgery. This is not typically covered by health insurance. Nasal dysfunction due to previous cosmetic surgery would be looked at in the same way. However, if there is a medical need for functional nasal surgery, such as septoplasty, nasal valve repair, or turbinate reduction, then it is possible that a portion of the procedure may be covered by insurance. It is important for individuals to check with their insurance provider to determine coverage for any type of surgical procedure.
