Let Your Beauty Shine
The skin of our face is a representation of our overall health. Ultimately, we desire bright, uniform skin that is free of blemishes or lesions and has an even texture and tone. Some of us genetically have challenging skin, while others deal with age-related changes only. Procedures like BBL Laser can help address these concerns and achieve healthier, more vibrant skin.
At Brobst Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics in Plano BBL Laser is just one of the multiple modalities we use to help our patients reach their skincare goals. Although we proclaim the role of medical-grade skincare products and prescription topicals, they frequently are more effective as supportive maintenance agents for the skin after a more responsive method has been utilized. Both pigmented skin discoloration and unwanted vascularity fit in this treatment algorithm. Our favorite tool for this is Sciton’s Broad Band Light (BBL) device because it consistently and rapidly provides an effective, no-downtime solution for these problems.
Feel the Light
Sciton’s Broad Band Light (BBL) is a skin rejuvenation modality that utilizes intense pulses of filtered light to cause skin transformation. Similar to a laser, light is used to create a positive change in the skin by selectively focusing on a specific target or chromophore. Unlike the commonly used skin resurfacing lasers that target water, BBL’s chromophore is usually hemoglobin within vascular skin issues and melanin within skin depigmentation. This allows for specific correction of age spots from sun damage, pigmented benign lesions, facial vessels, rosacea, general redness, and sometimes melasma to create an even skin tone without injury to the skin surface or surrounding tissue that would require significant downtime. A secondary benefit of BBL laser is upregulated synthesis of collagen, increased extracellular matrix construction, and improved cell turnover, which all benefit the skin appearance and quality as well. Sciton’s BBL belongs to a class of devices, better known as intense pulsed light (IPL) or, more commonly, a “photofacial.” However, BBL is largely considered the best-of-class machine for its “Forever Young” research and BBL Hero technologies demonstrating gene upregulation and the safest, fastest treatment techniques, respectively.
Whether it's Broad Band Light skin rejuvenation or a full facelift, the Brobst Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic team will treat you with the same care, precision, and skill in an attempt to exceed your expectations. Our goal is to inform you so that you can make an informed decision that is right for you. Each treatment we provide is equally important, and we treat it that way. as any other. BBL Laser often does best with multiple treatments. We want you to look forward to your visits and have the best experience possible.
The difference you can see
Many technologies and devices come with big promises, bigger costs, and minimal results. We strive to help you see through the marketing and give a transparent assessment of what may be the next best thing vs. what is tried and true. Our belief is that Sciton’s BBL is the best, most effective version of a reliable technology. Through a series of corrective treatments with BBL Laser Plano patients can readily observe improvements in skin discoloration and redness.
Exceed your Expectations
Our goal is to come alongside you and encourage, support, and remind you that you are likely being too hard on your appearance and your skin. Your visit begins with photographs and a discussion of your goals. We review your medical history and the contributing factors to your skin conditions. Dr. Brobst and our aesthetician Lauren also will work through best practices to help support your skin health moving forward. However, when we have great options that can correct what bothers you, then we want to help you meet your goals. We will discuss all the tools available, including Sciton BBL, and determine what is the best fit for what bothers you and the downtime involved. The treatment can often be performed the same day if it was discussed ahead or scheduled for a later date. Planning ahead also allows for additional aesthetic treatments, such as neurotoxins or fillers, to be incorporated into your treatment day. One of the versatile options we offer is BBL Laser, which can complement and enhance your overall skincare results. We will discuss comfort measures, but topical anesthesia is more than adequate for most patients. If you have additional questions about this procedure or are interested in learning more about other ways to take care of your skin, please call our Brobst Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics team in Plano. We will be happy to answer your questions and help you create a personalized treatment plan.
Beauty Bright
BBL laser treatment is generally well-tolerated and has minimal side effects. Prior to treatment, we recommend limiting sun exposure as this can lead to an exaggerated and unexpected pigmentation response. Additionally, a topical anesthetic is placed approximately 30 minutes prior to treatment if desired. This helps reduce the sensation to a mild rubber band-like popping feeling and bright light as the energy is absorbed by the target cells. Dr. Brobst and our master aesthetician, Lauren, will continue using the handheld device to deliver pulses of light energy until the tissue demonstrates the desired endpoint. Depending on the areas treated, the BBL Laser procedure lasts from 15 minutes to 1 hour and is accompanied by cooling gel and eye protection. Afterward, sunscreen and moisturizer are applied. Unless it involves getting overheated or significant sun exposure, you can return to your work duties or social obligations without issue the same day.
Tailored to your skin
After the treatment with BBL Laser some patients may experience temporary redness or swelling following treatment, but this response usually resolves within 24 hours. Cold compresses can help with this, and you may continue to apply a moisturizing cream or ointment to the treated area. We want you to recover without event, and the team at Brobst Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics will provide instructions on how to care for the skin at home. These include but are not limited to avoiding direct sun exposure, minimizing overheating, and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF for a couple of weeks. We are here to help and encourage following aftercare instructions to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of complications.
Your customized treatment plan will involve both a corrective and maintenance phase. The frequency of BBL Laser corrective treatments is every 4-6 weeks. The number of treatments needed for correction can depend on various factors, including the severity of the skin concern being treated, the individual's skin type and tone, and the desired outcome. The subsequent maintenance phase is dictated by your predisposition to the treated condition and the exposure to any exacerbating factors. Most commonly, we see patients for maintenance every 3-6 months with fewer treatments during the summer months unless a patient is prone to staying inside during the summer heat.
Every patient and skin condition is different. Treatment of your face, hand, and body pigmentation will be the most impressive and the longest lasting if you take care of your skin, use sunscreen, and avoid sun exposure. This may only need yearly retreatment or become almost a permanent correction with best practices. Vascularity and general redness correction is usually more difficult as some patients have a strong predisposition, and it is part of an overall skin fragility issue. Making lifestyle choices that are gentle on the skin and reduce flushing, such as limited alcohol consumption, less intense exercise, no abrasive products/devices, and avoiding overheating can help maintain your results. At a minimum, you can expect your results to last three to four months or between maintenance treatments.
You may experience some mild discomfort during and immediately after your treatment. We will discuss comfort measures, but topical anesthetic makes it comfortable. You can alleviate any post-treatment warmth or sunburn-like sensations by applying a cold compress to the treated area.
